The word Wilderness in Hebrew is Midbar. The root of that word is davar, or speak. Throughout the wilderness wanderings, God DVAR in the MIDBAR.

The LORD of hosts (Adonai Tsavaot) is with us,
The God of Jacob is our stronghold.
