Devotional: Moon Alphabet — From Darkness to The Light
What would you do if one day you woke up, and you realized that you had lost your sight? It happened to William Moon. He was born in England in 1818, and early in life, he contracted scarlet fever, went blind in one eye and lost most of his vision in the other. By the age of 21, he was totally blind.
He spent no time on self-pity. As he lived in England, the Braille system had not been introduced there. There were other systems that Moon knew, but he devised a raised system with forms that looked like the alphabet – the ‘A’ looks feels like an ‘A’ but without the crossbar. His desire was to teach blind students to read, but more importantly, he desired that they could read the Bible. The British and the Foreign Bible Society used his system to print Bibles in over 400 languages, all using his system.
The word ‘blind’ is used two different ways in scripture – one for physical blindness and the other is spiritual blindness. The Old Testament has no cases of blindness healed – this occurs only in the New Testament. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me, I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind but now I see.
Once we were all blind, but now we ‘see’. Moon was challenged by one system, so he forged ahead to develop a new system to bring the LIGHT of Messiah Yeshua to the blind eyes of many.
Sometimes I wonder if this is one of the reasons that God has so many different ministries in His Body. Just because one ‘system’ does not work for a person, does not mean that another ‘system’ won’t. God uses His methods and His means to bring a child into His kingdom. My Jewish brother Scott came to faith in Yeshua almost fifty years ago through the ministry of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. I am thankful for FCA, and for all the different ministries and groups that God uses to bring folks to His Son. I say “God, Bless them”!
The Bible tells us that ‘the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving,
that they may not see the light
of the Gospel
of the Glory
Who is the Image of God. 2 Corin 4:4
We are God’s ambassadors. I John 2:8 tells us that the darkness is passing
the true light is already shining. Our membership solely consists of
to the John 14:6 way:
I am THE WAY, THE TRUTH and THE LIFE
and no one comes to the Father but through me.
In fact, in everything we do we try to show that we are true ministers of God. We patiently endure suffering and hardship and trouble of every kind.
Some here have been beaten,
put in jail, faced angry mobs,
worked to exhaustion,
stayed awake through sleepless nights of watching,
and gone without food.
We have proved ourselves to be what we claim by our wholesome lives and by our understanding of the Gospel and by our patience.
We have been kind and truly loving and filled with the Holy Spirit.
We have been truthful, with God’s power helping us in all we do.
All of the godly man’s arsenal-weapons of defense, and weapons of attack-have been ours.
We stand true to the Lord whether others honor us or despise us, whether they criticize us or commend us.
We are honest, but they call us liars.
The world ignores us, but we are known to God; we live close to death,
but here we are, still very much alive. We have been injured but kept from death.
Our hearts ache, but at the same time we have the joy of the Lord.
We are poor, but we give rich spiritual gifts to others.
We own nothing, and yet we enjoy everything.
2 Corin 6:4-10 TLB
May God bless all the “Moon ministries” out there in our dark world. Thank You LORD, for those who forge ahead with the vision that God gives them, to bring the LIGHT of Yeshua Jesus to the blind world.
Who knows, maybe you will be the one to develop a new ‘Moon alphabet’ to help the blind to ‘see”.
